BACKGROUND
Cine Veritas: A Human Rights Film Festival is an annual undertaking of the UP Film Institute (UPFI) in celebration of the International Human Rights Day on December 10. The UPFI, in its mandate to promote film education and appreciation, seeks to promote a greater understanding of issues that confront contemporary realities by presenting films with a distinctive human rights theme. Each year filmmakers struggle at great odds, short finances, and threatening politics to bring to the screen urgent stories of human struggles and triumphs. The yearly festival showcases stories pertaining to relevant social issues from all over the world through the eyes of committed and courageous filmmakers. This festival is dedicated to bringing these stories to our communities so that the full-range of challenges facing people may be brought to light and thus better understood and addressed.
The films featured in this festival help put a human face to the threats to individual freedom and dignity, and celebrate the human spirit and intellect to prevail.
The UPFI has in the past worked with the Amnesty International-Pilipinas and other human rights advocates to promote their campaigns against violation of basic human rights and freedom by increasing the visibility of contemporary human rights and development issues through the powerful medium of cinema. Through the showcasing of selected films and facilitating panel discussions, it contributes to the development of socially responsible behavior and activism at grass roots level.
